What do I expect upon deer drop-off?

Accepted Answer

We will meet you at our shop or arrange for a no-contact drop off. We will collect basic
information (name, phone, cut order, special instructions), and we will schedule a tentative
pick-up date based on our workload. We will require the deposit of the cost of processing at time
of drop-off. Any further charges incurred will be collected upon pick-up.

Question 2

What if I want the hide/head/antlers/other saved?

Please inform us right away at time of drop off or first contact and write your request on the
carcass tag that will accompany your deer through the entire process! We offer drop-off services
to your preferred taxidermist at an additional fee.

Question 3

What should I expect when picking up venison?

Accepted Answer

Your cuts will be freezer wrapped and clearly labeled. Your grind will be in tubes and marked
“Wild Game”. If requested, we can box your meat for your convenience–otherwise, please bring
coolers or boxes to transport. We freeze upon completion unless requested otherwise.If there
were additional fees associated with your order, we will collect the balance at that point and you
will receive a receipt for services rendered.

What payment types do you take?

We accept cash, check, or card. We may assess a 3% convenience fee on credit card purchases.  A $35 fee will be applied to any check that is returned due to insufficient funds.

How do I know it’s my deer?

Accepted Answer

We have an open door policy. Don’t just trust our word–stay for the entire process!

Question 6

How long do I have to pick up my venison product?

Accepted Answer

If you have not picked up within three days of us contacting you to let you know your game is
ready, we will start assessing our storage fee. Should the storage fee equal the total cost of
processing, Township Meats will assume ownership of the product.

Question 7

How do you determine if a deer is dirty or unsafe to process?

Accepted Answer

Our cleaning fee will be applied only if there is excessive dirt, leaves, other foreign objects, or
gut material throughout the deer. We have the right to refuse whole deer, trim, or quarters if we
deem by visual inspection that the product is not safe to consume.

Do you test venison for CWD?

Accepted Answer

We do not test for CWD, but we are hosting a self-service CWD testing kiosk right between the processing shed and walk in cooler for your convenience. There are instructions for use and supplies located in the kiosk.

If you wish for us to cape the deer or return the skull for a Euro mount, please follow normal drop-off protocol and additionally write "CWD TEST" on your tag, and we will contact you for the information needed. We can also set up a time to meet you at the shop to get your CWD information filled out right away.

For more information about using the kiosk, please call or text Laura Owens at 608-931-7252. The kiosk will be checked once a week.

We will not hold deer awaiting test results.

No CWD positive deer once processed will be refunded the processing charge, as the work will have already been completed.

Question 9

What is the set up for mobile slaughter and processing?

Accepted Answer

Access to a road that can accommodate a 16' long box truck will be  necessary. Please note that the truck is twelve feet tall and does not turn sharply. Access to potable water is an absolute requirement, and we prefer to have a power source (120V).

We will come to your farm, stun the animal with a projectile, and skin/gut/quarter or halve on site. We will then bring the animal into the truck and leave the truck on your property for the desired hang time OR physically separate your carcass from subsequent carcasses as we continue operations. After the desired hang time, we will return to your farm to further process and package the product. You will be responsible for receiving the product immediately upon completion.

All waste products must remain on site.

When selecting the set up location on your farm, please be aware there will be loud noises, water runoff, and waste material.

Question 10

Can I sell the end product?

Accepted Answer

No--anything slaughtered by this truck must go back to the owner and cannot be sold. Animals must have assigned owners prior to harvest and all proper information must be recorded prior to harvest. Animals can be owned in shares (quarters, halves, or whole) by multiple owners with the proper documentation.

Can my neighbor bring an animal over to harvest during my appointment?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, no. Animals must have lived on the premises for over thirty days in order to be eligible for this mobile service.

Question 12

We have an animal that has injured itself. Can Township Meats help?

Accepted Answer

It depends. Otherwise healthy animals that have accidentally injured themselves within 24 hours are still able to be harvested for owner's consumption. Otherwise healthy animals that have accidentally injured themselves greater than 24 hours ago must pass a pre and post mortem inspection completed by a licensed veterinarian in order to be accepted for harvest and consumption. The cost of this will be the owner's responsibility. Any bovine (cattle) that cannot stand AND walk unassisted will NOT be eligible for harvest.

Question 13

Can Township Meats drop off to another processor or leave the carcass on site?

Accepted Answer

Yes--the processor must be able to process custom exempt animals. Leaving the carcass on site for the owners to process is an option--simply inform us upon creating the appointment.
